Hello and welcome. My name is Susan Butts and I am a basketmaker from Savannah, GA. I make all of my baskets using the coiling technique, and use primarily materials provided by nature.
My first baskets were made out of grass and weeds about 12 or 13 years ago. I was living in Northern Virgina at the time, and the only pine needles available were from the white pines, which are quite short and hard to work with. I think I made one with pine needles and decided it was not for me. When I moved down here to Georgia, I was so happy to find long pine needles all over my yard. I thought I would try making some baskets again (I hadn't made any for a few years) and this time use these wonderfully long needles. I was hooked again, and have been making them steadily ever since.
I also incorporate other materials into my baskets, like nut slices, pine cones, beads, sand dollars, seashells, and many other things. Most of my materials are provided by nature, and I love to experiment with different items I come across. That's why I refer to my baskets as Nature's Treasures.
In this site I have featured my newest baskets, baskets that have found new homes, and the ones made out of grass and weeds. All are for sale, unless noted otherwise. I am also using gourds to make baskets and have added a new gourd page. The handcarved wooden flowers are made out of tree limbs and can be quite a conversation piece. I hope you enjoy looking through the site .
All of my baskets are one of a kind, original designs, and each one is signed and numbered. Each basket takes on it's own shape and individuality as it is being crafted, and most of the time I'm not sure where I'm going with a design until I get done.
